Cetaqua Galicia

The Galician Water Technology Center, Cetaqua Galicia, is a private non-profit foundation that integrates, manages and executes R+D projects with the aim of proposing innovative solutions to companies, governments and society in the area of the integral water cycle.

Cetaqua’s organisational model is based on collaborative research in the private, public and scientific spheres, promoting their interactions and the fast implementation of R+D results in business and public activities related to the water cycle. Cetaqua network is composed by three technology centres of reference in the creation of knowledge and the development of technologies in both Spain and internationally.

The center possesses different facilities, laboratories and scientific platforms which operate in similar conditions to those implemented in existing installations, in order to ensure that every result obtained is fully representative and grounded in reality.

Cetaqua Galicia, as a current research centre of Suez Environment (the European Leader in industrial services and solutions company specialising in securing and recovering resources), was jointly founded with the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC, in Galicia in 2011). The organisational philosophy of Cetaqua is well-reflected in the composition of its board of trustees, formed by Aguas de Barcelona (Agbar), Viaqua S.A.U., the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Spanish Scientiifc Research Council (CSIC), which members meets regularly to report on the centre’s scientific and economic activity, and are directly advised by the Scientific-Technical Council (CCT).

Cetaqua Barcelona

Cetaqua is a non-profit foundation that integrates, manages and executes technological development and innovation projects on the integral water cycle to propose innovative solutions to companies, governments and society.

Cetaqua has a network of 4 technology centres with offices in Barcelona, Galicia, Andalusia and in Chile.

Cetaqua’s organizational model is based on collaborative research, its founding partners are: Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), and Aguas de Barcelona (Agbar Group), the Spain’s biggest water utility.

Cetaqua’s activity is permanently supported and supervised by the Technical Committee composed by senior experts from its founding partners. In addition, Cetaqua has an active participation in international technological platforms and associations related to the water cycle.

Being part of the Suez’s R&D Centres International Network, and with research premises in Spain and Chile, Cetaqua has become a technology centre of reference in the creation of knowledge and the development and validation of technologies and solutions related to the complete water cycle, both in Spain and worldwide. These innovations are implemented through experimental infrastructures, which are working in near-real operational conditions.

University of
Santiago de Compostela

University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) is one of the historical Universities in Spain, founded in 1495. It has more than 2,000 lecturers (about 38% female) and 300 research groups. USC has participated actively in more than 100 projects under various EU Initiatives. USC has been recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education in the top ten as one of the International Campus of Excellence.

The Group of Environmental Engineering and Bioprocesses (http://www.usc.es/biogrup/) belongs to the Department of Chemical Engineering at USC. It can be considered one of the best Environmental Engineering groups in Spain, with a scientific background in the period 2006-2014 of 343 publications in international and national journals (291 SCI), 33 Doctoral Theses, 12 European projects and international networks, 42 national projects and around 52 contracts with companies, 5 patents and 275 communications in international conferences. Since 2006, the group is recognized as a “Group of Excellence” and it was awarded with the “Martinez Moreno Prize 2011”. In 2012 the COST Action Water_2020 (ES1202) coordinated by the Group was achieved.

The Group has been working on the development of novel wastewater treatment technologies since its beginning in 1985. Currently this research focuses on: i) Removal of micropollutants; ii) Autotrophic denitrification ; iii) Aerobic granular reactors; iv) Hybrid membrane bioreactors; v) Anaerobic (co-)digestion; vi) Bioplastics (PHA) production and vii) Recovery of phosphate as struvite.

University of Vigo

UVIGO is a University located in Northwest of Spain. It has three campus: the main one located in Vigo, and two in Pontevedra and Ourense. UVIGO has placed a considerable emphasis on R&D activities by numerous internal funded projects, as well as through various services and research centers. This support has increased the scientific output and the capacity to obtain external resources. In fact, UVIGO appeared in Shanghai ranking of best universities in 2011 and 2012.

Nowadays, the UVIGO has about 22.000 students and 260 research groups, whose activity has resulted in significant scientific production in the form of doctoral theses, publications, conference communications and registered patents. In the last three years more than 950 projects confirm the cooperation of the University with the enterprises and economic associations of the region the nation. In the same way, more than 25 national and european patents have been applied by UVIGO in the last years. Moreover, UVIGO participates every year in the Framework Programme and other initiatives of the EU; more than 40 European Projects has been developed since the year 2007 (some of them coordinated by UVIGO), with a return of more than 20 millions of euros.

Researchers from UVIGO are well-known by colleagues through their participation in numerous national and international programmes, stays at prestigious visits of famous over Universities, and visits of famous researcher from the international scientific community.
